An abandoned fox cub and two orphaned badger cubs have formed a lifelong friendship

Welcome to the heartwarming tale of an abandoned baby fox and two orphaned badger cubs who have formed an unlikely but beautiful friendship. Phoebe, the fox cub, was discovered alone and frightened on the streets of Leeds, UK, and was immediately taken to the Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary. However, the sanctuary staff faced a predicament – they had no adult foxes to pair her with. They didn’t want Phoebe to rely on humans as her food source and support, so they had to get creative. That’s when they decided to place her with a pair of orphaned badgers to see if they could form a bond.

To everyone’s surprise, it worked out even better than planned! Phoebe connected with Bella and Betty, the badgers, and they became her new family. The badgers were also found wandering on Meltham, West Yorkshire streets and were taken in by the sanctuary. In the wild, foxes and badgers avoid each other, but the trio has found comfort and solace in one another’s company at the refuge.

Alexandra Farmer, the sanctuary’s chief executive, explains, “Foxes and badgers would never mix in the wild; in fact, they tend to keep out of each other’s way. But these three were wild animals without their mothers, all of a similar size, and we thought we could place them together as long as we kept a close eye on them.” And it has been a joy to watch them thrive together. They eat, sleep, and even play together!

The sanctuary hopes that by raising each other, these animals will be able to one day return to the wild. They currently reside in an outdoor kennel block in a sheltered area with bedding and a heat lamp, thriving since they were put together. They lap up puppy formula milk from the same bowl and cuddle together when it’s time to sleep.

They must be independent of human contact and live with other wild creatures roughly the same size. When some more fox cubs arrive, the sanctuary will introduce Phoebe to them, but for now, she’s getting along with the badgers just fine.
