Dave Bautista’s Weight Loss Transformation Leaves Fans Worried: “He Definitely Looks Sick”
Dave Bautista sent tongues wagging with his latest revelation of a dramatic weight loss that has resuscitated concerns among fans since he now looks so much leaner.
The transformation is huge for the 55-year-old former WWE star, who once ruled the wrestling world with his hulking physique. Once upon a time, during his wrestling days as “Batista,” his muscular frame used to be his characteristic feature; however, he resolved not to be stereotyped as the usual “big, dumb muscle guy” after he jumped into acting.
I’ve leaned down a lot; this is probably the lightest I’ve been since I was 19,” Bautista said in a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet.
He recalled how much he weighed at one of his heaviest points: “The heaviest I’ve been was 370 lbs. When I started as Deacon, I weighed around 325 lbs. For most of my wrestling career, I hovered around 290 lbs.
He admitted to weighing about 75 pounds less in the last year and a half.
“I’m about 240 lbs now. At the beginning of filming Knock at the Cabin, I was at 315 lbs. So, at that time is when I really buckled down and started working on losing it. Now, I’m super strict with my diet,” he said.
The actor, once one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, said that his transformation involved taking up a mostly plant-based diet.
His leaner physique even shocked fans’ appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival alone during the premiere of his new film, The Last Showgirl. Speaking earlier with Men’s Health about his new diet, Bautista claimed to be “mostly vegan” but hopes to go full-on vegan soon.
“I eat as clean as possible. I was mainly eating vegan, but couldn’t give up the eggs in the morning for breakfast,” said Bautista, who sometimes added fish into his diet to get extra protein. “During the day, I focus on protein and fats, and at night, I’ll have one low-carb meal.”
However, Bautista said he had to give up his favorite Filipino dish-chicken adobo. “I grew up eating chicken adobo. It’s one of the dishes I still make for my friends. Now I just watch them eat it, which is torture,” he said.
Aside from the diet, Bautista said jiu-jitsu was one of his key weight-shedding activities. He added that he took the martial art while training for the roles, including building muscles for Knock at the Cabin.
I put on all this weight for the movie-over 300 lbs,” he said on LIVE with Kelly and Mark. “I had trouble losing the weight afterwards, so brought my trainer, Jason Manly, to Budapest while I was filming Dune, and we did nothing but grapple for hours. I started dropping the weight and decided to stick with it to get my brown belt.
Yet, despite losing pounds, Bautista said there are just those damnable areas in the body where he struggles to lose. In his words, he has lost a lot of muscle but is okay with that since he feels more comfortable. There are still some spots like his stomach and chest that hold on to fat, and he can’t seem to get rid of it-even in his face.
As Bautista continues to further his career as an actor, it would appear he still selects projects with at least some thoughtfulness. He’s determined to avoid the stereotypical “muscle-head” roles he so frequently picked up at the outset of his acting career.
“When I first started acting, everyone wanted me to play the big, dumb muscle guy, but I fought against that,” he said to Digital Spy in 2017.
Now, Bautista is eyeing acting roles that are “interesting and multi-layered” since he is determined to show his talents beyond his physical presence.
