Grandma Peacefully Floats Away on Iceberg After Posing for Photos

We all go to great lengths for that perfect travel photo, but one grandmother may have pushed it a bit too far. Recently, English teacher Catherine Streng, 24, turned to Twitter to recount the outrageously surprising story of how her adventurous grandma almost became a human iceberg and washed out to sea in Iceland when an iceberg which she was posing on was washed away by a powerful wave. The internet was smitten with the tale, and Streng posted a pretty detailed thread with photos, reminding us all that chasing that perfect shot on Instagram could come with odd and unexpected risks.

Catherine works in South Korea, but her family is in Texas. She learned about her grandma’s icy adventure from her dad, who sent her a series of texts and photos from their trip to Iceland-a country to which they had traveled because her grandmother wanted to take in the stunning natural beauty of the Nordic country. And it was quite an experience.

The incident took place at Jökulsárlón Lagoon in southeast Iceland at the location known for its breathtaking icebergs. After being pointed out to a throne-shaped one, Streng’s grandmother immediately knew this would be the perfect spot for a photo. Shortly after she sat on the ice for the photo, however, things took an implausible turn. The wave came and dislodged it, and before he knew it, grandma was floating out to sea, still on her icy throne but calm and dry.

“My father described it thus,” said Streng, reading from one of his texts:

“She clambered onto the throne when a wave retreated and it remained briefly out of the water. But then the next wave moved the iceberg and it rolled. As the water retreated the ice throne was cradled and taken out to sea.”

As the iceberg continued to drift further away from the shore, Streng’s grandmother had to be rescued. Fortunately, a licensed boat captain and water rescuer, Randy Lacount of Florida, was in the vicinity and did not waste any time. Wading into the cold, turbulent water, he helped guide her back ashore. After the fact, Streng’s dad was happy to explain how appreciative they were for his well-timed assistance.

The grandmother and her family took the near-miss in stride and continued their holiday in Iceland. Streng wrote that many people had taken pictures like those with icebergs without anything happening, but her grandma just happened to have a little more “excitement” while shooting her picture. “That’s just the kind of thing that happens to my family,” she laughed.
