“How I Proved the Doctors Wrong by Completing a 10km Race”
|I’m Cooper Smith, a 19-year-old DJ and music producer from Melbourne, Australia. I’m also proudly disabled, living with cerebral palsy (CP). At birth, doctors told my parents I’d never walk. Today, I’m celebrating a milestone that defies those early predictions—I’ve just completed my first 10km race.

This achievement is part of the Quick as Thieves event, which unites music industry professionals to support the Fred Hollows Foundation. Not only did I conquer the physical challenge, but I also raised $10,000 to help restore people’s eyesight.
My path to this moment has been long and arduous. I took my first independent steps at age 9, and since then, I’ve been on a relentless journey to strengthen and coordinate my muscles. For months leading up to the race, I trained rigorously both in the gym and on various outdoor tracks. My support worker, Jess, became my personal trainer and stood by my side on race day.
Crossing the finish line to a chorus of cheers was an indescribable feeling. It wasn’t just about completing the race; it was about shattering expectations and proving that determination can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
To anyone facing challenges, remember: you have a choice—to do it or not. I chose to do it, and that decision has led me to this incredible moment. But I’m not stopping here. My next goal? The half marathon!
This experience has reinforced a powerful truth: with perseverance, support, and belief in oneself, we can achieve what others deem impossible. My journey continues, one step at a time.
