Joe Biden Attends Grandson’s Graduation in First Appearance Since Cancer Diagnosis

A Family Celebration in the Midst of Health Challenges

President Joe Biden stepped into the public eye for the first time since announcing his prostate cancer diagnosis—choosing a family milestone to do so. On May 23, Biden proudly celebrated the graduation of his 18-year-old grandson, Robert “Hunter” Biden II, from Salisbury School in Connecticut.

Hunter is the son of Hallie Biden and the late Beau Biden.. As photos of the event emerged, they showed Biden surrounded by loved ones, smiling with pride during the ceremony. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden shared one such moment via Instagram Stories, capturing herself and Joe alongside the graduate.

“Proud Nana and Pop! Congratulations, Hunter — we’re so proud of you,” she wrote, beaming with joy.

A Touching Outing Before the Ceremony

Just a day before the commencement, the Biden family made a quiet visit to The Woodland Restaurant in Lakeville, Connecticut. The restaurant posted a photo on Instagram showing the President engaging warmly with diners and staff.

“It was an honor to welcome Joe and Jill Biden to The Woodland last night,” the post read. “President Biden was gracious and thoughtful, making the evening truly unforgettable.”

*Restaurant owner Brandon Scimeca later told The Stamford Advocate that he received only a few hours’ notice before the President’s arrival.

“He treated everyone—customers, staff, even the busboy—with the same generous spirit,” said Scimeca. “He wasn’t focused on himself but showed genuine interest in others.”

Cancer Diagnosis: A Personal Battle, Public Strength

President Biden’s appearance came just days after his office disclosed he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. According to the official statement, Biden had been facing “increasing urinary symptoms,” which led to a diagnosis involving a high Gleason score of 9, indicating a serious stage with metastasis to the bone.

Despite the severity, doctors noted that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, making it more manageable through current treatment options. Biden and his medical team are currently assessing the most appropriate course of treatment.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Biden acknowledged the emotional toll of cancer, writing:

“Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”
