Personal trainer Mike Newman from Hampshire spoke about his life-altering journey after experiencing a catastrophic bike accident that nearly led him to lose hope. Doctors worried he might never be able to walk again when he was pushed off his bike during motocross practice and suffered a punctured lung, broken L3 vertebrae, a broken tailbone, and a broken pelvis in June 2019. After being informed that he would never be able to walk again, he attempted to recover for more than six months in the hospital. But Mike didn’t give up, and he began the process of self-rehabilitation.
To restore his strength and learn to walk again, Mike received physical therapy and employed a variety of support devices, such as a wheelchair and Zimmer frame. Although the procedure was complicated, Mike persisted, and his diligence paid off. He regained feeling in his legs, and with practice and self-discipline, he could stand and walk for brief periods. Mike’s main objective was to be able to use the restroom alone once more, and he felt tremendous pride in having accomplished this.
