Plane Carrying Up to 242 People Crashes After Take-Off in India – Thick Smoke Fills the Sky
|A passenger plane bound for London with up to 242 people on board has crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad, India.
The aircraft, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, reportedly lost control moments after departure and went down in the Meghani area of the city. According to BBC News, the plane lost signal at 10:08 a.m. Local time, at an altitude of just 625 feet — barely a minute after take-off.
Dramatic images shared on social media show thick black smoke billowing into the sky near Ahmedabad International Airport. Witnesses described seeing parts of the aircraft, including the fuselage and tail, lodged in a collapsed building.
Emergency crews have been dispatched to the crash site as rescue efforts are underway. The precise cause of the incident is still under investigation at this time.
In an official update shared on X, Air India confirmed the incident involving Flight AI171, which was en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick. The airline stated:
“We can confirm that Flight AI171 was involved in an incident on 12 June 2025. We are currently working to gather more information and will provide further updates as soon as possible.”
