Richard Simmons Passes Away One Day After Celebrating 76th Birthday
|Richard Simmons, the famous fitness guru with the curly hair and energetic personality, has died at age 76. He passed away just one day after celebrating his birthday.
NBC News reported that Simmons was found unresponsive at his Hollywood Hills home and was pronounced dead on Saturday, July 13. The cause of his death remains unknown.
Simmons received many birthday wishes from friends the day before. He shared his gratitude on social media, writing, “Thank you… I never got so many messages about my birthday in my life! I am sitting here writing emails. Have a wonderful rest of your Friday. With love, Richard.
Richard Simmons became famous for his Sweatin’ to the Oldies workout videos during the 1970s and 1980s, which many people loved for their fun and easy exercises. He also opened gyms and made lots of fitness videos throughout his career. His website calls him “one of the world’s most respected and well-known fitness personalities,” and says he helped people lose over 3,000,000 pounds altogether.
Simmons grew up in New Orleans and struggled with his own weight as a teenager, weighing 268 pounds when he graduated from high school. He decided to get healthier by eating better and exercising more, which changed his life.
In 1973, Simmons moved to Los Angeles and noticed that fitness centers didn’t always welcome people who were overweight. So, he started his own fitness studio called SLIMMONS in Beverly Hills in 1974. It became a popular place for exercise classes and events until 2013.
Besides his work in gyms, Simmons hosted a TV show called The Richard Simmons Show, which won several awards. He also wrote many books and cookbooks, and his fitness videos sold millions of copies worldwide.
