As the war in Ukraine continues with no clear resolution in sight, a U.S. intelligence analyst has raised concerns that Russia could be preparing for future military action beyond Ukraine.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, global leaders—including U.S. President Donald Trump—have been working to bring about a ceasefire. Trump had originally given Russian President Vladimir Putin a 50-day window to begin peace talks. However, during a joint appearance with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in Turnberry, Scotland on July 28, he revealed that the deadline had been shortened to just 10 or 12 days.

Standing alongside Starmer, Trump expressed his frustration with Putin’s ongoing military aggression:

“We thought peace was close a few times. Then suddenly, rockets are fired at cities like Kyiv. Innocent people are killed—sometimes in places like nursing homes. It’s unacceptable.”

Meanwhile, reports from Ukraine confirmed that Russian drone and missile attacks struck the Sumy region in the northeast, injuring four people. Russian officials claimed they intercepted 50 Ukrainian drones, with one civilian reportedly killed near St. Petersburg.

In a recent opinion piece for The Telegraph, Rebekah Koffler—a former U.S. military intelligence officer—stated that Russia could be preparing for another conflict in the coming years. While she does not believe a NATO country is the likely target, unless NATO forces directly engage in Ukraine, she warned that a post-Soviet nation such as Moldova could be at risk.

“Russia’s next military campaign may depend heavily on what NATO does next,” she explained.

Though there is no immediate indication of an invasion, experts stress that Western actions in the coming months may influence the Kremlin’s decisions in the region.
