Washington, Aug. 20, 2025 — President Donald Trump said Tuesday that reaching a peace agreement in Ukraine might improve his chances of “getting to heaven.” His comments came during a TV interview, a day after he hosted leaders from Ukraine and several European countries at the White House.

In his appearance on Fox News’ Fox & Friends, Trump remarked, “I want to try to get to heaven if I can. I’ve heard I’m not doing very well — that I’m way down on the list. But if I can reach heaven, this would be one of the reasons.”

The 79-year-old president has previously stated that ending Russia’s war in Ukraine is part of his bid to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump, who survived an assassination attempt last year, has adopted a stronger religious tone during his second term in office. At his January inauguration, he said he had been “saved by God to make America great again.” He has also appointed Paula White as his official spiritual adviser, and she has led prayer gatherings at White House events.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday that President Trump was sincere about his comments on Ukraine. “I believe the president truly wants to get to heaven, just as I hope everyone here does,” said Leavitt, 27, who is known to lead prayer sessions before her press briefings.

Trump continues to receive strong support from religious conservatives.
