Police and federal investigators said the fatal shot was believed to have been fired from the roof of the Losee Center, about 200 meters from where Kirk was speaking. Multiple videos from the crowded event circulated on social media and have been reviewed by investigators; some footage posted online appears to show a figure moving on a nearby roof in the moments after the shooting.

Two people were briefly detained after the shooting but were subsequently freed. Officials say they believe a lone gunman is responsible and that the suspect is still at large. FBI Director Kash Patel tweeted that one individual “has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement” and that the probe is ongoing. A second person taken into custody was also released after investigators found “no current ties” to the incident.

Video clips posted by radio host Alex Jones included one showing the aftermath with what appears to be a person on a roof and another showing attendees recording a figure on a roof; people in that footage said the person had been “running on the roof” and moving from spot to spot. Law enforcement has not confirmed the identity of the person shown in those videos.

Political leaders issued statements following Kirk’s death. Former President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social calling Kirk “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk” and expressing condolences to Kirk’s wife, Erika. President Joe Biden said, “There is no place in our country for this kind of violence. President Biden said, “It must end now,” and added that he and First Lady Jill Biden are praying for Kirk’s family and loved ones.

Investigators continue to review video evidence and pursue leads; authorities have not announced any charges or identified a suspect.
