A Canadian black bear recently made news in a tale reminiscent of the 2022 horror-comedy movie “Cocaine Bear” after grabbing and devouring 69 soda cans from a woman’s truck. The bear had broken the truck’s glass, which has now been dubbed “Cokey, the Bear,” to get at the pop cans that the woman had been storing ahead of a corporate function.
The truck’s owner, Sharon Rosel, was awakened by her dogs in the middle of the night. When she turned to gaze outside, she noticed the black bear cheerfully downing her enormous supply of soft drinks. The bear downed a phenomenal 69 cans in the ensuing half-hour, starting with Orange Crush and finishing with Diet Coke. Rosel claimed that the bear used his teeth, which seemed calcified can openers, rather than his paws to open the canisters.

A path of devastation was left in the bear’s wake due to its sugar-induced rage. During his impromptu happy hour, Cokey the Bear drank the 69 soda cans and trashed Rosel’s car, shredding the leather and shattering a window roller. Rosel remarked that the “white leather interior goes good with Orange Crush,” hoping insurance would help pay for some damage.

The Sunshine Coast Bear Alliance, a nonprofit organization, claims that even the tiniest odor in your car, such as that of a candy wrapper or scented air freshener, will attract bears.
