Duke of Lancaster’ ship in Wales, now derelict

Spread the love

The TSS Duke of Lancaster, constructed in 1955, served as a passenger-only steamer for several decades. Initially operating as a ferry between Heysham and Belfast, it later expanded its routes to include the Scottish islands and destinations in Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Spain.

In 1970, the ship underwent a conversion to become a car ferry, which allowed it to continue its services until 1979. However, its purpose changed in 1980 when it became a floating leisure complex called “The Fun Ship.” Unfortunately, this endeavor encountered legal issues and was forced to cease operations in 2004.

Since then, the TSS Duke of Lancaster has been moored in a Welsh estuary for over four decades. In recent years, ongoing efforts have been made to restore and reopen the ship to the public. Although the restoration project is still in its early stages, it holds great potential to revitalize the ship and transform it into a captivating tourist attraction for the local community.
