In a heroic rescue effort, courageous German firefighters saved an “uncooperative” squirrel whose head became stuck in a maintenance hole cover. Due to amazing viral images, the occurrence, reminiscent of a same incident four years ago, caught online viewers’ attention. The Dortmund Fire Brigade described the squirrel’s absurd situation in a Facebook post. Since then, their valiant efforts have received worldwide praise. Let’s explore the dramatic rescue effort in Dortmund’s Horde neighbourhood on a fateful Monday afternoon.

The squirrel’s suffering was initially discovered by a concerned passerby who saw the animal’s head poking out of a gully lid. The squirrel appeared stuck and unable to go forward or backwards. Unique images with the Facebook post showed the squirrel’s head and arms sticking out of the maintenance hole cover’s opening, resembling a small medieval stock. The situation was critical, and the scared animal must be saved immediately.

A concerned bystander tried to release the squirrel from its unanticipated incarceration since they were deeply concerned for its welfare. But when the nut muncher wanted to bite her, she was greeted with resistance. Unfazed, the kind bystander chose to calm the squirrel down by covering it with a scarf. After realizing the need for expert aid, she immediately contacted the fire brigade and waited for their arrival.

The firefighters responded immediately to the distress call and arrived at the location quickly. Their main goal was to rescue the terrified squirrel from its situation without harming it. However, the squirrel’s obstinate and rebellious behaviour made their work challenging. The firefighters methodically laboured to free the acorn hoarder from its prison with patience and competence. The squirrel was liberated after considerable struggle, much to the relief of all parties concerned.

The grateful squirrel, now free, swiftly ran away and took shelter in a nearby tree. Thankfully, the rescue operation was successful, as the animal survived unscathed and could return to its usual way of life. While celebrating the achievement of their heroic rescue, the Dortmund Fire Brigade was unable to identify the squirrel they had already pulled from a sewage cap four years prior. Red squirrels don’t appear to be the only animals occasionally trapped in maintenance hole covers.
