Ice Spice Criticized for Vintage Dress at BET Awards
|Ice Spice made a statement at the 2024 BET Awards on Sunday (June 30) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, but her fashion choice garnered mixed reactions.
The event, celebrating achievements in entertainment across music, sports, television, and movies, was hosted by actress Taraji P. Henson for the third time. Usher was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Drake led the nominations with seven, followed by Nicki Minaj with six.
Ice Spice, whose real name is Isis Naija Gaston, was nominated for three awards: Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Video of the Year for “Barbie World” (her collaboration with Nicki Minaj), and Best Collaboration for the same song. Although she did not win, she delivered a powerful performance of “Phat Butt” and “Think You the S— (Fart),” singles from her upcoming album Y2K, set to release on July 26.
In alignment with her debut album’s theme, Ice Spice wore a striking orange Versace dress with a keyhole cutout from the brand’s spring 2004 collection. She completed the look with a large diamond butterfly necklace, orange heels, and a retro bob hairstyle.
The vibrant outfit sparked a range of opinions on social media. One user expressed a longing for fashion critic Joan Rivers’ take, saying, “I miss Joan Rivers. I would love to hear her thoughts about now.” Another compared Ice Spice to Velma from Scooby-Doo due to her bob hairstyle. Criticism also included comments like, “She doesn’t even look real. But whoever dresses her should be fired,” and “Looks like a prom dress from back in the day,” with one person bluntly stating, “She looks a mess! Hair and dress!”
Ice Spice previously channeled 2000s fashion at the 2024 Grammy Awards in February, wearing a two-piece denim Baby Phat ensemble with a fur-trimmed jacket and a skirt with a train, which she described as fitting for a “Bronx Baddie.”
In March, she responded to criticism over a sheer black mesh and lace gown worn to the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party by clapping back on X (formerly Twitter). When a critic wrote, “I wish her stylist would try harder… same lace bodysuit back to back,” she retorted, “Let’s see u bi***s in custom Dolce.” She later apologized, saying, “I’m sorry for being mean. I was just trying to hurt your feelings because you hurt mine.”
Ice Spice also defended a woman compared to her in a negative context on X, stating, “U thought u ate, but my sis cute asf [sic].”
Looking ahead, the Grammy-nominated artist will embark on her first headlining tour in July, starting with international festivals before hitting U.S. venues, beginning in Washington, D.C., on July 30.
