Keanu Reeves Jokingly Claims Dracula Wedding Scene Led to Real Marriage
|In an amusing twist, Keanu Reeves has lightheartedly suggested that he is technically married to his former co-star Winona Ryder due to an unexpectedly genuine wedding scene they filmed nearly three decades ago.
The story stems from their work together on the 1992 film Bram Stoker’s Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. In the gothic horror movie, Reeves and Ryder portrayed Jonathan and Mina Harker, a couple who weds in a traditional ceremony.
However, in Coppola’s legendary pursuit of authenticity, he took an unconventional approach for that marital scene. As Reeves recounted to Esquire, the director “did a whole take of a marriage ceremony with real priests.” Both actors have playfully maintained over the years that with an actual priest officiating, they became married on set in the eyes of the church.
Ryder has repeatedly reminisced about the peculiar situation. During an Entertainment Weekly interview, she laughingly stated, “We actually got married in Dracula…I swear to God I think we’re married in real life.” She specified that Coppola used “a real Romanian priest” who “did the whole thing” for their characters’ nuptials.
In reality, the two have only shared a platonic friendship and professional relationship since playing lovers in the cult horror film. Ryder was previously engaged to Johnny Depp in the 90s, while Reeves has been in a committed relationship with artist Alexandra Grant in recent years.
The John Wick star has been effusive about his connection with Grant. Speaking to People magazine, he fondly recalled “A couple of days ago with my honey. We were in bed…smiling and laughing and giggling. Feeling great. It was just really nice to be together.”
While Reeves’ statements about marrying Ryder were clearly tongue-in-cheek, the anecdote highlights the warm camaraderie between the two longtime co-stars and friends. Their kooky on-screen nuptials have turned into an entertaining real-life inside joke that will likely follow them indefinitely.
