I am thrilled to share the heartwarming news of a Spanish diver who risked her life to save a 40-foot-long humpback whale trapped in an illegal drift net off the Balearic island of Mallorca.
Gigi Torras, one of the divers involved in the rescue, described the experience as the “best” birthday present. As the divers worked to cut the whale free from the crimson netting, Torras noticed that the enormous creature seemed to show respect toward her.
The rescue was a challenging and dangerous 45-minute operation, as the divers had to carefully cut the net from the front of the whale’s mouth and work their way backward. Despite early attempts to cut the net from a boat, the brave divers made it possible to free the trapped whale.
The animal lingered with the four divers to gather her strength and even showed what appeared to be “a little thank you sign” before swimming off to freedom.
It’s critical to remember that the United Nations has outlawed drift nets for 30 years due to the large number of other marine animals they also catch and the intended fish. This heroic rescue serves as a reminder of the vital need to protect our oceans and the magnificent creatures that call them home.
Thank you to the Palma de Mallorca Aquarium marine rescue center and the brave divers from the Albatros and Skualo diving centers for their heroic efforts in saving this beautiful humpback whale.
