For most people, the idea of coming face-to-face with a massive anaconda underwater is the stuff of nightmares. But for Bartolomeo Bove, a certified shark diver and skilled underwater cameraman, it was a chance to get a picture of one of the giant snakes ever. The green anaconda is a predatory species often found in South America’s swamps, marshes, and muddy streams. Bove and his diving companion Juca Ygarape headed to the Formoso River in Brazil to swim with the anaconda.

Contrary to common misconception, anacondas don’t usually attack people. The female anaconda that Bove and Ygarape encountered, which was 7 meters long, really seemed extraordinarily interested and playful, looking at their camera before swimming away. Anacondas are incredibly potent predators, though, and they prey on many creatures, including wild pigs, birds, capybaras, jaguars, and turtles. Because of their food, they are enormous, and they employ their power to compress and drown their victim before swallowing it whole.

Bove thinks that the video he got would help dispel some misunderstandings about these intriguing animals and demonstrate that they also have a kind side. Anacondas may respond if intimidated or harmed. Thus he highlighted the need to handle them with respect and care.

Coming into contact with a 7-meter-long anaconda underwater may sound intimidating, but as Bartolomeo Bove’s movie demonstrates, these animals can be friendly and exciting around people. Nonetheless, it’s crucial to remember that they are strong predators and must be handled with caution and respect.
