Selena Gomez’s “High Maintenance” Dating Requirements Spark Internet Firestorm
Pop star Selena Gomez has Twitter all riled up after revealing the qualities she looks for in a romantic partner during a recent interview. The 31-year-old singer got candid about a lyric from her latest single “Single Soon” that refers to her as being “a little high maintenance.”
When asked to unpack that line by the SiriusXM hosts, Gomez doubled down. “I think I have standards, and I think I live in a world right now where boys confuse standards with high maintenance,” she stated unapologetically. The “Lose You to Love Me” vocalist then spelled out exactly what those much-debated “standards” entail.
“You gotta be cool, man. Not cool like trying too hard to impress people,” Gomez clarified. “Just a genuinely nice person who can make me laugh. And you better be good to my family and friends too.”
Her frankness immediately set off a heated debate across social media. Many came vehemently to Gomez’s defense, arguing that asking for basic qualities like kindness, humor, and respect for loved ones is the bare minimum – not at all unreasonable “high maintenance” behavior.
“She doesn’t want a boy, she wants a grown man with good character. There’s nothing high maintenance about that!” one impassioned Twitter user exclaimed. Another added, “We should all have those standards! Selena’s requirements are not the issue here, the trash men are.”
However, Gomez’s detractors were just as vocal in slamming her as egotistical and out-of-touch. “Easy for a multi-millionaire to be so picky. Let’s see her date a normal guy for once,” read one cynical tweet. Others simply branded the actress as “entitled” and a “diva.”
Towards the end of the interview, Gomez clarified that she’s presently satisfied being unattached. “I’m just enjoying where I’m at right now. You go through phases of wanting a partner, but I’m good on my own for the time being.”
Mere months later, though, reports surfaced that Gomez had already found her perfect match – she’s now dating musician Benny Blanco. Evidently, the “high maintenance” queen’s standards weren’t too lofty after all.
