All dogs are undeniably perfect, but one special 10-week-old golden retriever puppy stands out from the pack. As he is affectionately named, Narwhal possesses an incredibly endearing feature—a “unicorn” tail that sprouts from his forehead, making him truly one of a kind.

Last week, Narwhal was discovered outdoors in freezing temperatures, huddled alongside another canine companion. Hearing about this extraordinary puppy, Rochelle Steffen, the founder of Mac’s Mission in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, immediately assisted her. Recognized for her compassion towards unique cases, Steffen couldn’t resist helping little Narwhal.
The moment Steffen laid eyes on Narwhal, her heart melted. She couldn’t help but smile wide as the puppy radiated happiness, illuminating the entire room with his contagious joy. While his “butt tail” wags non-stop, his unique facial tail, unfortunately, doesn’t share the same ability.
MAC’S MISSION
Narwhal’s great extra tail is a rare congenital disability, measuring just one-third the size of his regular tail. Astonishingly, X-rays reveal that this tail consists of skin and fur, lacking connections to his vital structures. It gracefully hangs down, reminiscent of a lock of hair, akin to the iconic superhero Superman.
Aside from a treatable case of worms, Narwhal is in excellent health. There are no medical grounds to remove his great tail, as it doesn’t cause him any discomfort. Narwhal remains blissfully unaware of his uniqueness, embracing life with the same carefree spirit as any other puppy.
Narwhal is currently residing with Steffen, basking in the love and care provided by his foster family. He delights in being cradled and showering his humans with affectionate kisses. Additionally, he thoroughly enjoys playing and frolicking around with his fellow canines, particularly bonding with the adult dog he was rescued alongside and a delightful Chihuahua mix named Ash. Their playfulness creates a heartwarming scene reminiscent of a big, joyous pile of furry happiness.
