Can you imagine looking out into the crowd at your college graduation, searching for familiar faces, and then spotting someone who quite literally saved your life almost two decades ago? Sounds like a movie, right? But for one young woman, it was her incredible reality, and trust us, you’re going to want to grab the tissues for this one.

Meet Josibelk Aponte. She just graduated magna cum laude from Eastern Connecticut State University. An incredible achievement, no doubt! But the real story, the one that’s making hearts burst, is who was beaming in the audience like a proud parent: Retired Hartford police detective, Peter Getz.

Their story began on what Josibelk calls the “best and worst day” of her life – June 25, 1998. It was a nightmare for five-year-old Josibelk: an apartment fire, choking on thick smoke, a rush of confusion, and then a sudden, terrifying darkness.

But then there was Peter. A patrolman at the time, he arrived at the chaotic scene just as a firefighter pulled a tiny, unresponsive girl from the flames. Without a second to spare, the firefighter handed the limp child – Josibelk – to Peter. Medics weren’t there yet. Time was ticking. Josibelk had stopped breathing.

What would you do in that moment?

Peter Getz, a man trained for crisis, didn’t hesitate. He crammed his 6-foot-5 frame into the back of his patrol car and started CPR as his partner raced to the hospital. Every second counted. And by the time they reached the emergency room, Josibelk was breathing again. A true miracle!

“It’s not just about me,” Peter insists, humbly giving credit to everyone involved – dispatchers, firefighters, hospital staff. But let’s be real, his quick thinking and decisive action that day were absolutely critical.

Josibelk still has the teddy bear Peter gave her in the hospital. Can you imagine the bond forged in such a harrowing moment?

As years passed, Peter kept Josibelk in his thoughts, wondering how the little girl he saved was doing. Then, about two years ago, Josibelk felt a pull to understand her past. She did what many of us do when curiosity strikes: she Googled her own name. That search led her to an article about the fire, which mentioned Peter. A little “Facebook stalking” later (we’ve all been there, right?), and she found him!

Since then, these two incredible souls have reconnected, sharing lunches and updates on their lives. From a child rescued from a fire to a college graduate ready to take on the world – their journey together is a powerful reminder of the ripple effect of a single act of kindness.

To see how successful she’s been, makes my heart beat faster,” Peter shared.

And Josibelk? She has nothing but profound gratitude for the man who didn’t just do his job, but truly saved her future. “Not many people can or are willing to put themselves in danger to save others,” she says. “My life is a gift, and it’s all because of selfless individuals like Peter and every police officer and firefighter who serves.”

This story isn’t just about a hero and a survivor; it’s about the incredible connections we make, often in the most unexpected circumstances, and how a moment of bravery can shape a lifetime.
