The world of entertainment is in mourning as legendary actor James Earl Jones has died at the age of 93 – to the sadness of fans and celebrities alike.

Jones’s agent confirmed that the iconic actor died peacefully yesterday morning, September 9, at his New York home. The late Jones was, for the most part of his career, a film and television legend, with few others ever achieving his esteemed EGOT status-a winner of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards. He is probably best known for his iconic voice work as Mufasa in The Lion King and Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise.

One of the most iconic moments in Star Wars history came when Jones, as Darth Vader, uttered the unforgettable line to Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker: “I am your father.” Upon learning the sad news of Jones’ passing, Hamill took to social media and paid a simple yet poignant tribute: “RIP Dad” followed by a broken heart emoji. Hamill has over the years often referred to Jones as “dad,” including in birthday tributes, a nod to the iconic on-screen bond.

This touching tribute was loved by the fans as it brought out the connection between two legends. Hamill also paid his tribute to other actors playing the role of Darth Vader, like David Prowse, who donned the costume for the character, and Sebastian Shaw, who played the unmasked Darth Vader among others.

Amongst the numerous messages, the one from Hamill stands as almost as poignant as a bereavement of another cherished figure who went into the memory book of Star Wars and childhood nostalgia. It would appear that in the blink of an eye, time has passed and the stars giving life to our favorite characters will slowly but surely fade from this world.

Although best known for providing the voice of Darth Vader, Jones appeared onscreen in everything from Field of Dreams and Coming to America to Conan the Barbarian. He also made an unforgettable guest turn on The Big Bang Theory, good-humoredly skewering his Star Wars legacy with co-star Carrie Fisher, who memorably played Princess Leia.
