Photographer Elisabeth Van Aalderen, who developed vitiligo at 25, has embarked on a unique photography project titled “Shades of Pale.” This condition, covering 60% of her skin, led her through various treatments, from creams to dietary changes and yoga, before she eventually accepted and embraced her vitiligo.

In an interview with Bored Panda, Elisabeth shared her journey of coming to terms with her diagnosis: “I couldn’t change the fact that I have vitiligo, so I started to embrace it.” Inspired by interactions during her daily work as a photographer, where people often inquired about her skin, she channeled her experiences into a powerful photography series.

Shades of Pale captures images of other women with vitiligo, an idea sparked by a girl who compared Elisabeth’s skin to a “unique tattoo.” Elisabeth believes that photography is a meaningful way to document and celebrate the beauty and uniqueness of vitiligo-afflicted bodies. She sees it as an ode to diversity and individuality.

Elisabeth expressed her motivation behind the project: “Approximately 60 million individuals worldwide are affected by vitiligo, a condition that remains unfamiliar to many. This discussion aims to shed light on the condition and also highlight the inspiring stories of resilient women who embrace and celebrate their unique beauty, setting them apart from others.” Her goal is to break stereotypes around beauty and encourage inclusivity, emphasizing that beauty transcends conventional norms.

Elisabeth has photographed women of various shapes and sizes from around the world. For many of them, the experience was not just a creative expression but also a therapeutic journey. Approximately 90% of the women she portrayed had never been in front of a camera. The photoshoots became a transformative process, boosting their self-confidence and contributing to their healing and acceptance.

Grateful for the positive impact on herself and the women she portrayed, Elisabeth highlights the supportive community on social media that has facilitated connections with individuals sharing similar experiences. The gallery below showcases Elisabeth’s sensual and empowering photographs, capturing the strength and beauty of women with vitiligo.
