For years, fans have known how tight Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus have been, the two basically treating each other like family. But an interview just recently let on that the connection goes even deeper than anyone could have ever imagined-they are actually biologically related!

The 78-year-old country music legend has just learned that her connection to the pop star runs thicker than that of mere godmother and goddaughter. In a segment on Access Hollywood, Dolly was informed that she and Miley share a common ancestor from Virginia. “Is that true? That’s amazing!” exclaimed the Tennessee singer.

This report confirmed this week by Ancestry in fact shows that Dolly and Miley are seventh cousins once removed; their common ancestor is a Virginian named John Brickey who is Dolly’s sixth great-grandfather and Miley’s seventh.

Dolly got the shocking news while promoting her new cookbook, Good Lookin’ Cookin’, which she co-authored with her sister, Rachel. “Well, we’re so close, Miley and I, I thought we would have been at least third cousins, ten times removed,” Dolly said jokingly.

The two have also collaborated musically and appeared on the hit Disney Channel show Hannah Montana, of which Miley was the star. Reflecting on their bond, Dolly added, “I’m sure she’ll get a kick out of that, but it doesn’t surprise me because she does feel like family.”

Ancestry further disclosed that the Brickey family traces their roots back to France, where one of their ancestors came to the U.S. during the 1600s. Ancestor John Brickey, who links the two singers, was born in Virginia in 1740. He later relocated to Blount County, Tennessee where he remained until his death in 1806.

Though she’s more affectionately referred to as “Aunt Dolly” or “Miley’s fairy godmother,” this new revelation seals the deal-the two artists are indeed seventh cousins, once removed. Ancestry even took to social media to break the news: “Who’d a thought there was that much music in this Smoky Mountain DNA?”

Both singers have always spoken glowingly of each other. Miley, 31, frequently refers to Dolly as a maternal figure in her life. Miley, in an interview with W Magazine recently, remembered a touching fax Dolly sent her two Mother’s Days ago: “Dolly wrote to me to say, ‘How much do I love you? As much as my heart can hold and as far as my arms can reach.’ It gets me choked up,” Miley shared. “I just love her so much. This past Christmas, she even gave me a mannequin dressed exactly like her-ten it was such a major gift.”

On her part, Dolly has let it be known how much she loves her goddaughter. As she once said, “We really have a true bond, she is like a daughter or a sister to me.” She remembers good times working with Miley’s father, Billy Ray Cyrus, during his Achy Breaky Heart days, in which she got to be Miley’s godmother.

During a London news conference last year, Dolly reflected, “I worked with her daddy Billy Ray, we toured together for a few years, and of course, Miley became my goddaughter. We really have a true bond.”
