Taylor Swift Embraces Trump Supporter Brittany Mahomes at US Open, Gets Slammed
It wasn’t long ago that Brittany Mahomes made tabloid headlines after the former president Donald Trump thanked her for reportedly showing her support amid his 2024 presidential campaign. Brittany, wife of NFL player Patrick Mahomes, was “caught” liking Trump’s Instagram post from Aug. 13 where he shared, “The 2024 GOP Platform.” The post, filled with a series of talking points employed misinformation and direct attacks towards various minorities, including “Deport pro-Hamas radicals,” “Keep men OUT of women’s sports,” and “Stop the migrant crime epidemic.”
Screenshots exposed Brittany had “liked” the post before apparently un-liking it; soon after, she faced an incredible amount of backlash from every corner of the internet. In an Instagram story, Brittany seemed to double down, saying: “I mean honestly, to be a hater as an adult, you have to have some deep rooted issues you refuse to heal from childhood.” She then went on to like pro-Trump comments, one saying: “Glad to see you aren’t backing down.” Trump himself thanked Brittany on Sept. 4, calling her “beautiful” and praising her defense of him and the MAGA movement.
The fact she sat in a different suite from Brittany during last week’s Kansas City Chiefs game led many to believe it was in response to her outwardly pro-Trump stance. Taylor and Brittany have become fast friends since Taylor began dating Patrick’s teammate Travis Kelce last year. The two women were fixtures at Chiefs games last season, with Brittany gaining entry into Taylor’s inner circle.
The distance between Taylor and Brittany at the recent game, however, had many thinking it was a very public stand against her friend’s pro-Trump reputation. That marked one week after Taylor received backlash for her brief romance with The 1975 frontman Matty Healy last year.
Taylor has been quiet on the 2024 election, despite speaking out against Trump in 2020 and publicly supporting now President Biden. The close association with Brittany has infuriated some of the fans who want Taylor to get more politically engaged. Others, however, say that we should not expect celebrities to make their personal political opinions public. Ultimately, Taylor’s decision to embrace Brittany at the US Open despite their apparent political differences has sparked a debate about the boundaries between celebrities and their fans.
