This amazing incident occurred when a group of hyenas attacked one of an elephant’s young, and an elephant stepped in to save the baby.
To protect its young, the elephant is seen rushing at the hyenas.
American photographer Jayesh Mehta, 47, took these incredible images in the Savuti area of Botswana’s Chobe National Park.

We heard the sounds of distressed elephants, Jayesh remarked. We discovered a pack of 12 to 14 hyenas pursuing a herd of about eight elephants after abandoning the trail and heading toward the sounds in the bush.
Two adult female elephants, a few teens, and a newborn elephant made up the elephant herd.

The infant had already been hurt by the time we arrived as the hyenas were attempting to attack it.

Attack: According to the photographer, “The hyenas were attempting to get at the infant, which had already been harmed by the time we got there.”

The elephants were moving quickly through the undergrowth. The other elephants made an effort to be as near to the infant as they could as it clung to its mother.
For the sake of the infant, they needed to stop regularly for relaxation. Each time, a circle was created around the infant.

During the pursuit, the hyenas continued to dart in and nibble at the youngster, severely mauling it, especially in its hindquarters.

It was incredible to witness some hyenas approaching from all directions to frighten the larger elephants, and other hyenas attempting to seize the infant whenever the focus of the larger elephants was diverted.
The two adult elephants continued to whip their trunks at the hyenas with aggression, but they did not hurt them.

We attentively followed the pursuit while keeping a safe distance to prevent any human meddling in this natural conflict. Throughout over an hour of the pursuit, the elephants were able to fend off the hyenas; but, once they spotted the elephants, the chase continued. The elephants finally managed to get away.
It was most likely one of the most thrilling experiences, and words alone cannot do it justice. We got a few scrapes and scratches from navigating the underbrush.

“The sheer adrenaline of this life-and-death encounter was astounding,” the author writes. “The loudness of the beasts, the bumpy journey through the jungle, the dust—some of it deliberately created by the elephants to hide their whereabouts.”
Escape: During the chase, the elephants were able to fend off the hyenas for about an hour; nevertheless, the hyenas later discovered the elephants, and the pursuit continued. Finally, the elephants were able to flee.
