Andy Fierlit, a man of unwavering commitment, vowed to be by his wife’s side through sickness and health. When his wife, Donna, suffered a debilitating brain aneurysm 27 years ago, doctors advised placing her in a skilled nursing facility. However, Andy rejected this suggestion, determined to restore normalcy to Donna’s life and go above and beyond. Thus began their extraordinary journey.

Donna and Andy have traversed seven continents, exploring 20 countries, all while Donna remains confined to her wheelchair. CNN reports that Donna experiences short-term memory loss and relies on her husband for daily tasks, but together they have embraced life’s adventures. Donna has even affectionately named her wheelchair “Proud Mary,” symbolizing their collective resilience.

Their travels, however, have been challenging. Handicap accessibility varies worldwide, and they have encountered numerous obstacles. In Europe, for instance, train systems often lack adequate facilities for disabled individuals. Donna once found herself relegated to the cargo area. In rural Australia, the absence of ramps required her to disembark the plane via forklift. Despite a handicap-accessible hotel room in Ireland, Donna faced difficulty due to a narrow entry door.

Andy and Donna’s love story dates back 58 years, when they first met at a church dance as high school sweethearts. Initially, Donna dismissed Andy’s advances when he asked for a stick of gum. Undeterred, Andy persisted, and after a few dates, their relationship blossomed. Five years later, they exchanged vows, building a family and raising four children.

Financially, the couple has faced challenges. When Andy’s employer went bankrupt, he took on odd jobs, including fruit peddling, to provide for his family. Despite these obstacles, Andy believes in the power of planning and perseverance to overcome adversity. He emphasizes that love requires patience, understanding, and kindness.

Funding their trips primarily from their dwindling savings, Andy and Donna are accumulating cherished memories along their extraordinary journey. They remain hopeful that, with the generosity of others, they will one day fulfill their dream of reaching Scandinavia. Andy’s mantra is “one step at a time,” with the ultimate goal being to live fully and embrace life’s joys.
