Singa, an African lion that resides in Belgium’s Pakawi Park Zoo, was confronted with the onerous responsibility of raising five rowdy cubs after their mother, JJ, sustained an injury and was forced to be taken from them for a few weeks to heal. Singa struggled to care for his little brood while their mother was abroad, although appearing to be trying his best. His parenting abilities could have been better.

Singa attempted to raise the cubs and take them to a safer location as their mother would, but being a male lion, he lacked the knowledge and experience necessary to do so. As a result, the cubs cried every time he approached them. Singa was kind to the cubs despite their temper tantrums and was quite understanding. However, he did become irritated when they began to bite his tail.

Singa and his offspring were depicted in stunning images by wildlife photographer Linda Smit “The cubs wailed every time he approached and attempted to relocate them, even though he was quite loving with them. He was extremely patient with them, but when they started chewing his tail, he did become a little irritable.”

The cubs were ecstatic when JJ returned to their enclosure after fully recovering from her wounds. Singa’s attempt to care for his pups while their mother was away emphasized the difficulties of unexpectedly providing additional childcare for both people and animals.
