Neptune Rises from the Sea: A Mesmerizing Sculpture with a Story to Tell
|More Info: mymodernmet
Have you ever seen a statue appear and disappear with the tide? On the shores of Gran Canaria, Spain, there’s a towering sea god who does just that—captivating beachgoers with every wave.
A Sea God Set in Stone
Rising from the waters near Melenara Beach in the Canary Islands, the Neptune sculpture is far from ordinary. Crafted by the late Spanish artist Luis Arencibia, this striking 13.8-foot figure has stood anchored in the sea since its installation in 2001.
Locals call it Neptuno del Puntón or Neptuno saliendo del mar—“Neptune of the Tip” and “Neptune Emerging from the Sea.” As the tides ebb and flow, the statue seems to vanish and reappear, giving visitors a magical view every few hours.
Weathering Time and Tide
But Neptune’s dramatic location comes at a price. Over the years, playful children and pounding waves have slowly worn the sculpture down. The damage peaked in 2010 when a storm snapped off the sea god’s arm and trident.
It wasn’t until 2017 that the sculpture was fully restored—at a cost of over €23,000. The repairs included stainless steel reinforcements and welding the piece firmly to its rocky base. To discourage climbers, it was even coated with a slippery layer of grease.
More Than Just a Statue
For many, Neptune has become a symbolic protector of the coast. Spanish journalist Luis León Barreto once described him as “fierce and gentle, vigilant and playful”—a silent figure watching over the sea. Local legends even claim his hollow eyes glow at night, like a mythological lighthouse guiding lost souls to safety.

It’s not just a statue—it’s a story of resilience, artistry, and the ever-changing power of the sea.
