The First Meeting of a Lion Cub with His Father

A series of touching pictures were taken of a lion youngster and his father becoming acquainted. Despite being one of the world’s most fearsome predators, the father seemed as sweet as a house cat as he saw his young pup. To capture the poignant moment, photographer Suzi Eszterhas spent many months following the lion pride on the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.

The seven-week-old cub hesitated when he first walked up to his father, but he rapidly got over his timidity. In one tender picture, the little cub even seemed to kiss his father’s head. To ensure the adult lion was not being too violent with her kids, the lioness maintained a close eye on all interactions between the cubs and their father.

The images demonstrate the great lion’s kind handling of the helpless pup. Ms. Eszter spent three months researching the pride for the children’s book series Eye on the Wild. She started monitoring the cubs when they were just three weeks old. Around seven weeks old, the mother lion determined that her cubs were old enough to interact with the rest of the pride, including their father. Ms. Eszterhas was there to record the memorable occasion.

At first, the cub was timid and uneasy, but the father was very kind. The cubs started playing with their father as they got to know him better. The father replied by playing with them tenderly and even growled. During these exchanges, the mother watched everything and stood by to attack the father if he became abusive toward her cubs.

In conclusion, photographing newborn animals might be challenging because they are frequently hidden away. Yet Ms. Eszterhas’ persistence and commitment to the task enabled her to observe and record unique events like a lion cub’s first meeting with his father.
