Originally constructed as a warehouse for Tait & Co., a pioneering foreign trading company in Taiwan, the sturdy brick building has a rich history. During the Japanese occupation, the Salt Association of Japan assumed ownership of the property, which was later passed on to the Taiwan Salt Company after the Japanese were expelled. However, the decline of the salt industry following World War II resulted in the warehouse’s abandonment and subsequent deterioration. As time passed, the relentless growth of the banyan tree’s roots and branches began to fuse with the structure, blurring the boundaries between architecture and nature.

Local folklore shrouded the Anping Tree House in an aura of foreboding, associating the banyan tree’s aerial roots with negative energy. Consequently, the site was once regarded as a gloomy and haunted place. However, a remarkable shift occurred in 2004 when the site was designated a tourist attraction. Today, visitors can embark on a captivating journey through history for a nominal fee of around $1.50 ($50NT). They have the opportunity to explore the nearby Old Tait & Co. Merchant House, which now functions as a museum, and the mesmerizing Anping Tree House itself.
