Boston’s underground music venue has been abandoned
Did you know that Boston has a special place called Piano Row? It’s a really old part of the city with buildings that were built a long time ago. These buildings were famous because they used to have shops where people could go and see pianos. Pianos are big musical instruments you can play by pressing keys with your fingers.
One of the buildings on Piano Row is called M. Steinert & Sons. It’s a six-story building that was built in 1896 by a person named Alexander Steinert. Back then, it was designed by architects named Winslow & Wetherell. They made it look fancy and nice.
Inside this building, there is something cool called Steinert Hall. It’s a special room where concerts used to happen a long time ago. The room is four stories below the ground! Can you imagine that? It was a very important place for musicians and artists in Boston. Famous people like Josef Lhévinne, Josef Hofmann, and Sergei Rachmaninoff used to perform there.
But in 1942, the hall had to close because of some rules about keeping people safe from fires. They also didn’t have enough money to fix everything and make it safe again. So, it stayed closed for a very long time, almost 80 years!
Guess what? In 2015, some new owners bought the building and wanted to bring Steinert Hall back to life! They want to fix it up and make it a concert hall again. Isn’t that exciting? It will be a special place where people can listen to beautiful music.
