Fred, a ten-year-old golden Labrador, has again made headlines after adopting 15 orphaned ducklings at Mountfitchet Castle in Essex. He adopted nine orphaned ducklings at the same castle in 2018 when he was only seven, so this is his second time doing so.

She mysteriously vanished overnight at the Castle in Stansted, leaving the ducklings orphaned. Since then, Fred has taken on the role of their foster dad and has been seen carrying them around on his back and cuddling with them in the sun.

Fred’s owner, Jeremy Goldsmith, said it was not surprising that Fred had found a new family to care for. Over the 15 years that he has owned Fred, the golden Labrador has spent a lot of time at the castle with the other creatures, and it has become second nature to him to be among the various rescued animal.

Mountfitchet fortress, where Fred and the ducklings stay, is a Norman Motte and Bailey fortress fashioned of wood. Before William the Conqueror assaulted it in 1066, the court had been an Iron Age hill fort, a Roman signal fort, a Saxon, and a Viking village.

The ducklings are expected to stay with Fred at the castle until they are old enough to survive independently. Meanwhile, pictures and videos of Fred and his new brood have captured people’s hearts worldwide.
